About this word search

The Kaleidoscope was invented in the early 1800s by the Scottish scientist David Brewster, and its name comes from Greek words for beautiful, form and look. Jack-in-the-box, Walkie-talkie and Hula hoop are on the list too, a mix of toys from many decades.

Jack-in-the-box and Walkie-talkie lose their hyphens and become one long run of letters. Start with the J in Jack-in-the-box and the Z in Kazoo, both rare. Words can be hidden backwards and diagonally in this big grid.

Nostalgic grown-ups may want to tell stories about toys they once had. For a class, ask students to pick one toy from the list and find out when it was first made.
