How it works
Three steps to a puzzle on paper
Type your words
Between three and thirty words works best. Long words need a bigger grid, short words are actually harder to spot.
Pick size and directions
For young children choose a small grid and only the easy directions. For adults anything goes: diagonals, backwards and a grid of twenty by twenty.
Print or save
The print button opens your browser’s print dialog. Choose a printer there or "Save as PDF". The answer key goes on a separate sheet, so you can leave it out.
Tips
Making a good word search
- Keep the words to one theme. Someone who knows it is all about the farm searches with more focus and has more fun.
- Avoid words that sit inside each other, like cat and cattle. The generator places both, but the solver then finds the short one twice.
- For a lesson or a test, put the answer key on the second sheet and print that one only for yourself.
- Want to keep a puzzle? Save it as a PDF. The page does not remember your words, so once you close it, it is gone.

Is the word search maker free?
Yes. You do not need an account and there is no watermark on the puzzle, only a small line with the name of the site at the bottom.
Can I save the word search as a PDF?
Yes. Press print and choose "Save as PDF" in the print dialog. That works in every modern browser on computer, tablet and phone.
How many words fit in a grid?
A ten by ten grid holds about ten to twelve words, a twenty by twenty grid well over thirty. If a word does not fit, the page tells you which one.
What happens to accents and spaces?
In the grid they become plain capitals: café becomes CAFE and "ice cream" becomes ICECREAM. In the word list the word stays the way you typed it.
Can I use the puzzles in class or at a party?
Yes, and you do not need to credit us. Only reselling them as a product is not the idea.
Why do I get a different grid every time?
The generator places the words at random. If you do not like a grid, press shuffle again. If you do like it, print it right away.
