About this word search
For young children, 26 January is mostly a summer day off: a Picnic, a game of Cricket, a Swim at the beach. This list stays with those simple things, and Wattle, the golden flower on the coat of arms, adds one word that might be new.
Read each word out loud and let your child find its first letter. From there, follow the row to the right or the column down, the only two ways a word can lie. Sun and Hat are three letters long and the quickest finds.
With slightly older children, you can explain that not everyone celebrates on this day, because for many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people it is a sad day that marks the start of colonisation, and talk about what it means to share a country.
