About this word search
Australia Day on 26 January marks the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788. Many people spend it at a barbecue, at the beach or at a local citizenship ceremony. For many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, the same date marks the start of colonisation and is a day of mourning, which is why words such as Reflection, Community and First Nations sit in this list.
That makes the puzzle a useful way into a conversation about history and reconciliation, at home or in the first weeks of the school year. Older children can find out whose traditional land their school stands on.
Entries in the fourteen by fourteen grid lie flat, stand upright or slope, but none is reversed. Southern Cross and Sausage sizzle are long runs without a space, while Flag and Beach are short enough to slip past.
