About this word search
At a fifth or sixth birthday the guests are often just starting school, and ten words is about right for their attention span. Cake, Hat, Card and Wish are short and easy to sound out.
Let a grown-up read the list aloud first. Then each child picks a word, finds its first letter and follows it to the right or downwards, the only two ways the words run. Balloon has a double L and a double O, which is fun to point out before the search begins.
Print a copy for every party bag, or put one at each place while everyone waits for the cake to come out. Children who finish early can draw their own birthday cake on the back.
