About this word search

Plants carry much of this list. Golden wattle is the national floral emblem, the Waratah belongs to New South Wales and Kangaroo paw to Western Australia, while the Jacaranda, originally from South America, turns whole streets purple in October and November. Magpie is here too, a reminder of swooping season, when nesting birds defend their patch in parks and along the walk to school.

All eight directions are in play, backwards included. Lorikeet and Waratah have unusual letter combinations and stand out quickly. Daylight saving and Grand final are long runs without a space, worth chasing early before the grid fills up with crossings.

A nature walk makes a good follow-up: older students can photograph as many words from the list as they find and present them to the class.
