About this word search

Surname, Ancestors and Descendant make this a good start for a family history project. Many British surnames come from jobs, places or a father's name, such as Smith, Hill and Johnson, which can lead older pupils to look into their own.

Grandparents and Generation are long and good anchors in an eighteen-square grid where words go every way, backwards included. Niece and Wife are short and need more patience.

For a project, pupils can interview an older relative about a Wedding, a Reunion or an old Photo album, and write up what they learn using five words from the list.

Ways to use this word search

  • In the classroom

Print it as a task for early finishers, or to open a lesson on this topic. With the QR code on the sheet, pupils check their own answers.

  • At home and on the go

Pack a few printed sheets for the car, the train or the holidays. A pen is all you need, no screen required.

  • Play together

Print the sheet twice and race each other. Whoever finds all the words first wins. Or play it online and see who is fastest.
