About this word search

A Sea shanty is a work song that sailors sang to keep time while hauling on ropes. A Stowaway hides on board without paying, a Lookout watches for land or danger from high up, and Mutiny is what happens when the crew turns against the captain.

This eighteen by eighteen board lets words run backwards and diagonally as well as straight. Buried treasure and Quartermaster are good starting points. Then look for rare letters: the Q in Quartermaster, the W in Shipwreck, Stowaway and Scallywag, or the Y in Spyglass.

Older children could write a ship's log for one day at sea, using at least five words from the list, from the first Barnacle scraped off the hull to the last Cannonball fired.
