About this word search
Starting school is a big step, and a handful of familiar classroom words can make it feel a little less new. Pen, Book, Bag and Desk are short enough for a child in the first year of school to sound out with a grown-up sitting close by.
Before the hunt starts, say every word on the list out loud as a pair. Each one lies flat in a row, read from the left, or hangs down a column, read from the top, so run a finger along one row at a time and stop at the first letter you need. Chalk, Ruler, Paint and Class have five letters each and take a moment longer.
Afterwards, go on a hunt around the room for a real pen, a book and some glue, and tick each one off the list.

In the classroom
