About this word search

Melbourne and Auckland are the nearest names here, but the rest reach far: Samarkand on the old Silk Road, Kyoto with its temples, Ulaanbaatar on the Mongolian steppe and Reykjavik, the most northerly capital of an independent country.

All eight directions are in use, backwards included. Buenos Aires, San Francisco and Mexico City are printed without spaces. Ulaanbaatar has a double A twice over, which makes it stand out once you know to look.

An armchair traveller might follow up by putting the cities in order from closest to furthest from home.

Ways to use this word search

  • With your coffee

Print a sheet for a quiet moment at the kitchen table or in your armchair. Start with the regular version and save the hard one for when you really have time for it.

  • On the go

  • Puzzle together

Bring the sheet to your book club, a night in with friends or a visit to your parents and see who finds every word first. Or play online and find out who is fastest.

Try it in Spanish too
