About this word search

Across much of Australia, the sound of a hot summer day is the Cicada, whose males call loudly from the trees. The list moves from creatures like that to the language of biology: Thorax, Abdomen, Exoskeleton and Metamorphosis, the change from egg to larva to Pupa to adult that butterflies and beetles go through.

Every direction is possible in the eighteen by eighteen grid, including backwards and both diagonals. The X in Thorax and Exoskeleton is a quick foothold, as is the W in Weevil and Earwig. Several words end in FLY, from Damselfly to Blowfly, and it can be easier to find those endings first and then read back to see which word they belong to.

Science teachers can pair the puzzle with a lesson on life cycles, asking students to sort the words into stages, body parts and species.
