About this word search

Soccer is actually a British word. It started as student slang in England for association football, the official name of the game, and it stuck in the US once football here came to mean something else.

In this fourteen-square grid words lie flat, stand up or slant, but they all read forward. REDCARD and FREEKICK are printed without spaces. Goalkeeper and Substitute are the longest, a good pair to start with.

After a Saturday game, ask your young player which of the twenty words came up on the field that day. A Header, a Free kick or the Whistle at Halftime makes for a quick recap on the way back to the car.
