Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know before you begin
About playing, the daily puzzle, the languages and the cost. If your question isn't here, let us know.
Playing
What exactly is Words with Mia?
A word search you can enjoy at your own pace. Swipe across the letters, watch the word light up, and never worry about a ticking clock. There's a fresh puzzle every day, a path of 250 gradually expanding levels, and separate puzzle books built around a single way to play.
Is there a timer or an opponent?
No. There are no timers, bots or leaderboards to compete against. Two game modes on the path do deliberately use time limits, Blitz and Mia's Race, but they're only two of the 250 levels. Take as long as you like with the rest.
How long does a game take?
The daily challenge usually takes about five minutes. Levels on the Word Path start out shorter and gradually build to around ten minutes near the end, as the board grows from six by six to eighteen by eighteen.
What happens if I get stuck?
You can ask for a hint, which briefly highlights one word. A limited number of hints are available for free, and you can earn an extra one by watching a short ad. You never have to skip a level. The path will simply wait for you.
The daily challenge and Sparky
Does everyone get the same daily puzzle?
Yes. Today's puzzle is generated from the date, so everyone around the world plays the same board in their own language. Each day of the week has its own format, from The Warm-Up on Monday to The Trail Forest on Sunday.
What is Sparky?
Sparky is the little flame that keeps burning as long as you play every day. It carries across all your languages, so if you play the daily puzzle in Swedish instead of Dutch, your streak will keep going.
I missed a day. Have I lost my streak?
Not straight away. You can make up for one missed day by watching a short ad, and Sparky will carry on burning from where you left off.
Does the daily challenge cost anything?
No. The daily challenge and Sparky are free in all fifteen languages, even without a pass. That's not changing.
Languages
Which languages can I play in?
Fifteen languages at launch, with twenty stamps to collect: Dutch and Flemish, English in four varieties (UK, US, Canadian and Australian), German, French, Spanish, Portuguese (Brazilian and European), Italian, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Indonesian, Finnish, Catalan, Polish and Turkish.
Does my menu language change when I play in another language?
No. The app language and puzzle language are separate. If you play a Spanish board while using the app in Dutch, everything around the board stays in Dutch.
Can it help me learn a language?
A little. When you play in a language other than your menu language, each word is followed by its translation in brackets: "Leo (Lion)". So you learn as you search. It isn't a course, but the words do stick with you.
What are those stamps?
Each language has its own postage stamp featuring a distinctive letter: IJ for Dutch, ß for German and Ø for Norwegian. Play in a language and you'll add its stamp to your language passport. There are twenty to collect.
Pricing and passes
What can I play for free?
The complete Word Path in your own language, the daily challenge and Sparky in every language, the first 25 levels in every other language, plus five introductory booklets with fifteen levels each. You'll see the occasional ad along the way.
How much does a pass cost?
Thuispas costs € 4,99 per month or € 24,99 per year and unlocks everything in one language of your choice. Wereldpas costs € 7,99 per month or € 39,99 per year and unlocks everything in all fifteen languages. Both remove the ads between puzzles.
Can I buy a single booklet without a subscription?
Yes. You can buy a puzzle booklet with seventy-five levels for € 2,99 as a one-off purchase, and it's yours forever. Purchased booklets have no ads.
Can I switch languages with Thuispas?
Yes, up to once a month. Your progress in the language you leave is safely saved and will be waiting when you return.
Are there lives, coins or other currencies to buy?
No. Nothing runs out, and you never need to buy anything extra to keep playing. Everything you earn, including frames, portraits and stamps, comes from playing and is never for sale.
The practical bits
Do I need an account?
No. You can start straight away. You only need an account if you want to carry your progress across devices.
Does it work offline?
The puzzles are generated right on your phone, so you can keep searching without a connection. You'll need internet to sync your progress and watch an ad.
Which phones does it run on?
The app is on the App Store for iPhone and iPad, and on Google Play for Android.

Still have a question?
The app keeps growing, so plenty still changes. If there's something missing from this page, we'd love to hear from you and we'll add the answer.
